Kalle Rovanperä made his debut in the Drift Masters GP over the weekend
Rovanperä currently leading the World Rally Championship arrived in Ireland Friday afternoon straight from testing for Croatia.
Following a few practice runs at the very fast Mondello track, Kalle scored a 93 to qualify for the top 32 battles on Sunday, with the 7th best score throughout qualifying.
Sunday would be the big challenge in the battles, Knowing he was a target and a massive scalp despite making his debut first up was Stavros Grillis, not perfect but his chase run forced Stavros into a mistake causing his Corolla to over rotate, leaving Kalle into the Top 16.
Rovanperä would be pitted against Jakub Przygoriski in his GT86, They could not be seperated through the two runs and tied the battle, needing a third run to decide who would progess to the top 8.
Kalle threw everything at the decider, but unfortunatley dropped a wheel of the track, millimetres from Przygoriski, still managed to push, but just a little short, eliminated from the last 16.
Losing grip on the first battle, the team reduced tyre pressure but lost more grip, leading to a tyre change
We looked at the tyres and the car after the run, and all we could find was that the tyre must have been spinning on the rim,” Rovanperä pondered after his debut.
“That’s why we lost all the grip. I’m a little annoyed that because of a mechanical thing like that, you couldn’t really do anything else yourself.
Will we see him back….. without doubt
